Classmate design!

We drew names of classmates out of a hat for an Information Design assignment. We are to describe a classmates's process of work and how they are different than other designers... promote them! I chose Tamara out of the hat, an extremely talented cubemate of mine.

She is very strategic with design and logical in her thought process. She isn't afraid to start over if an assignment isn't working and seems to love a challenge. She's also hip and into retro stuff. Surprisingly though.. she is very quiet and humble despite her awesomeness. She reminded me of a friendly video game :) I created a character of her to use in my video game booklet of Tamara: Master of Strategy! I also recovered an old NES game with a custom sticker I made for the project.

Hope it gets done by Wednesday.. eep.

A few of the students in our class have been asked by Steven Heller and Lita Talarico to submit imagery for Illywords magazine

The deadline is tight but we will have some pieces in there for the next issue if all goes well :)

Adventure Time with Pen Ward!

This never gets old with me- Adventure Time!
Fred of Frederator Studios visited SVA today during Steven Heller's Saturday lecture and talked with us about this short which I have loved for a couple months now. The creator of this is 22 year old Pendleton Ward.. i love it. It feels like a dad listened to his 5 year old son tell a story and made it into a story verbatim... just so awesome. No formula following.. just straight up from the mouth fun!

*plus John DiMaggio of Futurama Bender fame plays Jake the Dog!

Book class

We were asked to come up with a design idea for a book for Howard Reeves's class. I chose to design and illustrate a book about the songs used in capoeira supplying the Portuguese and the English translations. My husband has been practicing capoeira for almost three years now, and I love to listen to the music that they sing during a game in the roda. Much of the music has been passed down from group to group. Some of the songs have beautiful descriptions of imagery/landscape.. others are just rhythmic and fun. Many of them also elude to the origin of capoeira which was a self taught defense slaves used while in Brazil disguised as dance. Music is integral to capoeira- you play to the rhythm.
It has become the basis for many breakdance moves as well. I want the book to make others want to learn more about the sport's history and culture.

This is one spread for the song "Chue Chua" which has simple lyrics but is actually about the fear of escaping a master and making a sound while in the woods.

Can Design Touch the Heart?

This was my first project for Stefan Sagmeister's class, "Can Design Touch the Heart?". We were asked to find an audience of 1-24 people, our choice, and design something that would emotionally effect them. It could shock them, make them happy, sad or angry... whatever. I decided to do something for my friend.

My friend had written an entry on a blog that she felt time was passing her by and that she wasn't accomplishing anything... she truly felt that she wasn't successful. She was concerned that her career was going no where and felt out of place because she isn't married like many of her peers. It upset me that she didn't see herself the way I and the rest of her friends do.
I wanted to let her know all of the reasons she IS successful and do it in way that would remind her constantly...

I asked her friends from the blog to write me about her and why they felt she was a successful person-no reasons could include anything about career or a significant other.

I found a flipclock on ebay and decided to make her a living resume of qualities that matter. For every minute there is a phrase listed by a friend and for every hour there is a portrait of her. How did I get the photos you ask?

I had to tell her a little white lie... I told her my husband, Wes, need to model real faces with expressive and subtle emotions for his 3D computer animation class and that he has modeled my face one too many times.. She was happy to help us out by posing for him- like a good friend! We asked her to make different faces and made her laugh a lot in the process too.

Later we (friends who supplied material) installed this clock in her apartment and surprised her with it.

This project is being considered for a design article by SVA publicity along with a couple others from my class. I loved helping my friend realize she is a successful person for all of the right reasons and to help her remember it every minute...

SVA life

yeah... i haven't posted in a long time, but then again I haven't done anything for myself in a long time either..even see a movie... sorry everyone.

This new graduate schedule is REALLY tough and time consuming- yes, I'm typing at 5 in the morning- my only free time!
I have class every day of the week and when this program started we really hit the ground running with assignments due every day of the week. It's taking time but I am adjusting to no sleep, eating on the run, and subway living... such is the life of a graduate student in NYC. It is extremely rewarding though and so I am grateful for it...

I get to see amazing people and beautiful work everyday! I look forward to studio visits! Here are some people we have seen so far-

Ross McDonald- letterpress type and illustrator extraordinaire
Louise Fili- Steven Heller's amazing talented designer wife
Christoph Niemann-fantabulous illustrator
Marshall Arisman- fantabulous illustrator
Blue Q creator
Rick Poyner- design critic, author of Pornotopia
Paul Bunditz-Kid Robot
David Rees- Get your War On
